The Kaiser Wilheim Memorial Church stands in the centre of Berlin in the famous area of Breitscheidplatz .
The church is famous for not only attracting visitors who would have a particular interest in churches but also for the sense of peace you feel once inside. Considering you are in the heart of this busy city, the peace and tranquility of the Kaiser Wilheim amazes people who come and go.
The church was built back in 1891 by Kaiser Wilhelm II, unfortunately after allied bombing in 1943, all that was left standing was the west tower of the church, the locals protested to ensure this part of the destroyed church remained and it became known as the “hole in the tooth” as this is what it resembled. Later in 1961 a new octagonal church designed by Egon Eiermann was built beside the existing tower. A freestanding hexagonal bell tower was constructed on the site of former main nave of the destroyed church.
When visiting the church remember it’s a war memorial too. Once you go inside it’s surrounded by concrete, the fire blackened old tower stands in dignity, proud but humiliated after withstanding the blasts from the war and here to tell the tale today.
