House of World Cultures

Berlin
The House of World Cultures (Haus der Kulturen der Welt) is the centre point in Europe for non-European art. Art exhibitions are held here presenting culture from outside Europe, also through films, theatre, concerts, lectures and congresses.

The house is located in the centre of Berlin, making it an ideal location for all visits. The House of World Cultures is set in one of Berlin’s architectural landmarks, the former Congress Hall and located next to the Carillon in Berlin-Tiergarten and the Chancellery.

The House currently focuses on the contemporary arts, and developments in the cultures of Africa, Asia and Latin America. All the cultures are then interpreted through stories, music and art. The people of Berlin refer to the Congress Hall as the “The Pregnant Oyster” as the building resembles in some way a shellfish.

The purpose of the House of World Cultures was, and still is to bring people from so many different backgrounds and culture together so they can learn and teach each other.
