What lies in store for you at Berlin Zoo is a guaranteed unforgettable experience. The Zoo alone holds the largest number of species in the world. The zoo is located in Tiergarten, and houses over 14,000 animals with over 1,500 different species.
Opened in 1844, the Zoologischer Garten Berlin was the first zoo in Germany. During World War II, like most of Berlin, the zoo was almost destroyed by the bombings and only 91 out of 3,175 animals survived.
All animals are housed in enclosures that are specially designed to recreate their natural habitat. The latest addition to the family is “Knut” the first polar bear to be born in Berlin Zoo in over 30 years was born in December 2006. One of the main features in the zoo also are the giant pandas, which are seen in only three other zoos in the world.
The aquarium is as impressive as the zoo, with over 9,000 species of fish, reptiles, amphibians and insects. Crocodiles, Komodo dragons and tuataras live in the terrarium within. There is a footbridge where you can literally walk over the reptile pit which is quite exciting.
The zoo is open to the public all year round, so no matter what time of year you visit Berlin, the zoo and aquarium cannot be missed.
