Bebelplatz

Berlin
Bebelplatz is a historical area in Berlin surrounded by many buildings and sites that have left their mark in the history books. The square is located opposite the University Buildings. From the square you can view St-Hedwigs cathedral with its amazing dome, along with Berlin State Opera house the “Staatsoper”.

One of the main reasons Bebelplatz is visited today by so many tourists, is to view the scene of “Buchverbrennung”. On May 10th 1933 the Nazis sent thousands of books up in flames, books that the Nazis found did not meet with their own ideas and beliefs. Visitors can today look through a glass plate on the floor of the square into an empty chamber better known as “The Empty Library”.

Stretching the length of the west side of Bebelplatz, the former Royal Library is now part of Humboldt University. The University was built in 1766 and well known political philosophers Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels studied here.
