This popular attraction, is in fact, one of the oldest churches in Berlin, as it was built in the early 13th century. St. Nicholas Church is located in the Mitte area of the city in the centre of Nikolaiviertel. The church got its name from St. Nicholas who was the patron saint of merchants.
The church suffered severe damage during World War II, but it was not reconstructed until 1981 when the designs of the original church were restored as much as possible.
The church was constructed back in the 13th century under Romanesque style, later in the 16th century the church was recreated to a Gothic hall church and this style is viewed to date. The appearance of the outside of the church was changed a little bit in 1902, where sandstone extensions were added, have a look at the three steeples with their Baroque decoration from the outside also.
In Berlin today, the church is used mainly as a concert venue and museum. It is distinguished for its acoustics and the church when being rebuilt included a set of 41 unique church bells.
