Gendarmenmarkt

Berlin
Gendarmenmarkt is one of the most beautiful and famous squares in Berlin. The popular square is located in the historical centre of Berlin. Here you will find Konzerthaus, along with the French and German Cathedrals. In the centre of Gendarmenmarkt stands the statue of Germany’s famous poet Friedrich Schiller.

The square was used at the end of the 17th century as a market place known as the Linden Markt to local Berliners. During World War II most of the buildings were badly damaged and even destroyed. Thankfully today all the buildings are restored to their original glory.

The twin structures if Franzosischer Dom (French Cathedral) and Deutscher Dom (German Cathedral) frame Schinkel’s (now Konzerthaus) to form a superb architectural trio. Over the past few years the area has just developed to include many fancy restaurants around the square leading to an increasingly metropolitan flair.

If you plan a visit to Berlin over the Christmas period be sure to go along to visit Gendarmenmarkt as it hosts one of Berlin’s most popular Christmas markets.
