Friedrichswerdersche Kirche (Friedrichswerder Church) the first neo-Gothic church in Berlin, was designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel and was built between 1824 and 1830. The church lies close to Unter Den Linden, not far from the State Opera House.
Sculptures including classical and romantic works by Johann Gottfried Schadow, Christian Friedrich Tieck, Emil Wolff and Christian Daniel Rauch are on exhibit in the nave area of the church.
The church was almost destroyed during World War II, it has been fully restored today, however you could say the church is viewed more as a museum. The church holds mainly sculptures from the 19th century. You will also see many memorabilia and documents that revolved around Schinkel – the original designer of Friedrichswerdersche.
Have a look at the spacious interior which was deliberately designed by Schinkel during the original construction of the building, where he created a number of vaults throughout and stained glass windows which will catch your eye immediately.
