Brandenburg Gate

Berlin
The Brandenburg has to described as the best known landmark in Berlin. It is in fact the trade mark to the city. Come to see this magnificent gateway to the city and also to enjoy the freedom to walk through this work of art. It stands today as a symbol of the reunification of the two sides of this great city.

Build between 1788 and 1791 by Carl Gotthard Langhans and after the Second World War, the gate was the only building left on Pariser Platz apart from the remains of the former Academy of Arts. In 933 the National Socialists marched through the gate in a torch parade, introducing the darkest chapter of German history, leaving the city destroyed and Germany divided.

Today the area has now been rebuilt as a representative square with office buildings, mainly by banks, the French Embassy and the Academy of Arts.

Today you can see 16 crosses that have been placed on a “memorial fence” between the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag building. These crosses commemorate 16 people who died at the Berlin Wall.
