Berlin – know before you go:
Money -
- ·Berlin is part of the European Union and uses the Euro as its currency.
- ·ATMs are scattered all over the city and accept all major bank, credit and debit cards.
- ·Like any major European city Berlin is chip and pin compliant so you’ll be able to pay for stuff knowing that your account is safe and secure, but many shops are not necessarily equipped to deal with cards so always have cash handy.
- ·With tips most restaurants and cafes include a service charge in the bill, but if you’re happy with the service you can add a 5 to 10% tip if you wish, or just round up to the nearest Euro. It’s also the custom to tell the waiter in a restaurant how much you are tipping them rather than just leaving money on the table.
Business Hours
- Shops vary in their opening times but generally places open a bit later and close that bit later too. Department stores generally open between 11am to 8pm, while smaller shops will often be open until 7pm and 4-5pm on weekends.
Emergency Numbers
- ·Police 110
- ·Ambulance/Fire Service 112
When’s a Good Time to Go
We reckon September’s an excellent time to go. It’s still nice and warm at this time of year but the regular bouts of rainfall dip, as do the crowds, so you’re free to wander the city and enjoy the sights in the fine weather without being rushed off your feet.
Of course if it’s colour and hustle and bustle that you want then head in the summer months, the Love Parade dance festival starts on the 15th of July, while the famous art festival Oberbaumbrücke Festival is on in the month of August. If you’re a film fan then you should know that the enormous Berlinale Film Festival is on in February, though the weather is pretty uncompromising at this time of year!
