Getting around Berlin:
Berlin is one of the most advanced city’s in the world when it comes to public transport so you’ll have no problem getting around, and it’s just as well because as you’ll know by now the sights and delights of the city are spread all over the place! If you fancy riding by taxi then Berlin is better than most, the service is pretty cheap and all you have to do is flag down a cab with the yellow light on the top, or pick one up at one of the many taxi ranks.
Of course you can make use of the extensive S and U-Bahn system. The over-ground and underground rail network covers the whole city and is remarkably well structured. The bus and tram systems are equally comprehensive, and handily enough you can get a day travel card which pretty much covers the whole city AND allows you to use every mode of public transport. They are called Tageskartes and cost around EUR5.80 for full use of bus, tram, S-Bahn and U-Bahn in zones A and B, which are pretty much the only areas you’ll need to get around. One of the best things about the rail system is that, with the exception of Line U4, it runs 24 hours so you can party all night and still not have to worry about getting home!
Trams only really operate in the East part of the centre of the city, and for sight seeing purposes it’s handy to know that there are two types of tram: Metrotrams generally take you from A to B, cutting out unnecessary traffic and local stops, the other trams take in every nook and cranny, if you’re in the Mitte area take the time to hop on the Line 68 route – it’s famous for taking in some absolutely breathtaking scenery!
For something different you can make use of the public bicycle system, when you see one of these bikes with the trademark number etched on the frame, just pull out your mobile and call the number to unlock it. This mode of transport is popular amongst the residents of the city and is handy for seeing the main sights and all the little nooks and crannies. The city has it’s own cycle paths and the topography of Berlin is generally flat so don’t worry about having to huff and puff your way round the city!
